Abstract
1373490 Coating steel with chromium; tin electro-plating; heat treating strip BRITISH STEEL CORP 7 Dec 1971 [9 Dec 1970 (2)] 58391/70 and 58392/70 Headings C7B C7F and C7N A surface coating on a metal strip is heattreated by scanning it with an energy beam (electron, ion or laser) impinging on a portion of the surface, the beam intensity and dwell time being such that the heating effect is confined to the coating. The two sides of the strip may be treated simultaneously, while the beam may scan in a direction transverse to the direction of strip travel. The process may be used to flow brighten a coating e.g. electrolyte tin plate, or to fuse a coating applied in particulate form e.g. chromium. In a particular embodiment a strip is advanced below a staggered array of electron guns each of which scans transversely one longitudinal zone under such conditions that all of the surface is heated once only. As exemplified a 1 metre wide strip 250 microns thick has a 0À385 micron tin coating and moves at 2À5 m/sec. The target area of each beam is 0À00418 mm<SP>2</SP> and scanning frequency 24500 Hz, with an intensity of 57À2 gigawatts/m<SP>2</SP> and residence time 0À0067 seconds.
