Abstract
For converting the setting of a potentiometer to a binary word, e.g. for controlling the frequency of a local oscillator signal generated in a phase locked loop of a radio receiver tuning system, conversion circuitry includes a voltage comparator (49) having a first input (-) coupled to the wiper (27) of the potentiometer (31) and a second input (+) coupled to a first capacitor (45) which is charged during a first predetermined period. The time at which the voltage developed across the first capacitor (45) exceeds the voltage at the wiper (27), and produces a change of the output level from the comparator (49), determines the binary word, e.g. according to the count then reached by a counter (35). To self-stabilize the conversion circuitry, a second capacitor (59) for developing the reference voltage for the potentiometer (31) is charged during a second predetermined period in accordance with the level of the voltage developed across the first capacitor (45) at the end of the first predetermined period. <IMAGE>
