Abstract

A frequency synthesizer useable in 'frequency hop' type transmission comprises a phase locked loop including a controlled oscillator 1, an adjustable ratio divider 3 a phase comparator 4 for comparing the divided output frequency with a reference signal, a frequency control circuit including a frequency discriminator (8), a level comparator 7 for comparing the frequency discriminator output signal with phase comparator output signal and programming means 10-17 for superimposing a signal on the phase comparator output signals to effect a change in the frequency of the oscillator 1 and simultaneously to adjust the division ratio of the divider 3 to correspond to the changed frequency for eliminating or minimizing the loop unstable period arising from such a change in output frequency. The programming means may include clocked latches 12, 13 and a D/A converter 17 responsive to a digital signal applied at 10. For frequency hopping, a pseudo-random signal is applied at 10. Frequency modulation of the output may be effected by a signal applied at 20. <IMAGE>
