Abstract

A vehicle lamp unit for giving a coloured light, e.g. a direction indicator lamp, has the coloration produced by a colour filter (4) located behind an apertured mask (6) so that the colouration is largely hidden when the lamp is switched off. The filter and mask surround the illumination source (1) in the manner of a hood. The filter is formed with a series of part- cylindrical lenses (7) that have lines of focus (8) in the region of respective elongate apertures (5) of the mask to prevent illumination loss due to the mask. The lamp unit has a parabolic reflector (9) or a prism disc for the light emergent from the mask to produce a parallel beam that is dispersed in the required pattern by the cover glass (10) of the lamp unit. <IMAGE>
