Chambers.-The size of the explosion chamber is varied without changing the position of the projectile D in the barrel by adjusting the space E between the charge at the base of the projectile and the inner wall of the gun breech. Fig. 2 shows a muzzle-loading gun provided with a gear B for rotating the barrel C to move it relatively to the breech-ring A by means of screw threads c. The adjustment is indicated by a helical scale F on the barrel reading against a fixed index a. In a modification, Fig. 5, a screwed sleeve I carrying the obturator x is slidably adjusted in the breech by rotating a screwed pin H by means of a gear G.
