Abstract
253,225. B.S.A. Guns, Ltd., and Norman, G. March 19, 1925. Addition to 233,817. Machine guns.-A modification of the screw mechanism described in the parent Specification for operating the sliding bolt-sleeve of a shortrecoil gun, comprises a fixed screw-threaded stem on which is mounted a rotatable sleeve adapted to be reciprocated by the barrel and formed with a helical cam which operates the bolt-sleeve. As shown, a fixed non-rotatable stem 1 is formed with steep pitch screw threads engaged by corresponding internal threads on a sleeve 11 adapted to be driven back, and consequently rotated, by the barrel. The sleeve has an external cam 12 adapted to engage a projection 14 on the boltsleeve so that its rotation effects relative displacement of the bolt-sleeve. For effecting the axial movement of the sleeve 11, the barrel extension 19 is formed with a projection 21 adapted to engage a circumferential groove 20 at the front of the sleeve, the front wall 23 of this groove being formed with a longitudinal slot 24 into which the projection 21 passes when the barrel is in its forward position, as shown in Fig. 1, the sleeve being then locked against rotation. A longitudinal slot 13 is formed through the cam 12 and rear flange to allow of the return movement of the projection 14 on the bolt-sleeve. The stem 1 and sleeve 11 are mounted in a cylindrical chamber 2 in a detachable cover 3 of the breech casing.
