Abstract

A flat solar panel has a plurality of tubes (7) for conducting a heat transfer gas, preferably air, through the panel; the tubes are in thermal contact with a backplate of the panel which, in a known way, incorporates a front screen of glass or plastics material: the tubes are made of a heat conductive metal and are corrugated to increase the heat transfer surface area and to promote turbulence in the heat transfer gas to improve the rate of heat transfer. The inlet (3) and outlet (9) from the panel are arranged along the same side and the tubes communicate with these through an inlet header chamber (6) and an outlet header chamber (8) respectively, from which the tubes either extend continuously in a U-shape from inlet to outlet as shown or alternatively extend as two straight parallel sets communicating with one another through a common chamber at the end of the panel remote from the inlet and outlet. <IMAGE>
