Abstract

1492916 Space heating radiators; solar collectors H J A LYNCH and P D ASKEY 28 April 1976 17161/76 Headings F4S and F4U A fluid conduit for use as a radiator or solar collector comprises upper and lower manifolds 22 interconnected by heat exchange members 24 each formed in cross-section of a hollow tube 31 having an opposed pair of tapered fins or wings 32 extending therefrom, the manifolds and members each being formed from a onepiece extrusion. The manifolds and members are formed from an aluminium alloy or plastics material and the fins' surfaces are grooved, corrugated or peened to increase total surface area The tube 31 may also have internal ribs, and the angle between the planes of the wings may be greater than 180 degrees. Each manifold comprises an elongated body having a central cavity 26 for fluid flow and two parallel flanges 28 which define a slot 29 therebetween into which one end of the members 24 are secured to register with apertures 38 in the manifold. As shown the securing means comprises a threaded tube 53 and an adhesive, e.g. epoxy resin may be filled into the remaining space in the slot. alternative securing means, Figs. 2 and 3, is described which utilizes hook-bolts and brackets, the bolts passing through apertures in the flanges and slots in the members 24 and the mating faces of the members and manifold being sealed by a resilient jointing material. The members 24 may be anodized and dyed or coloured or coated to improve absorption and decrease emission when utilized as solar heat collectors. A collector 10 is secured between the rafters 2, Fig. 5, of a roof or studs of a wall and the normal weather proofing material is at least partially replaced by glass 4 or other transparent material set in glazing bars 6. to form an air gap 8, and the collector is supported on insulation 14.
