Abstract

201,088. Morris, C. V. Nov. 20, 1922. Vacuum tubes. - A valve with plug and socket connections 'has one or more resistance coils arranged concentrically around the socket and means for varying the amount of resistance in series with the filament. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, a resistance coil b is wound around a flat insulating core c which is secured by screws c<1> around the insulating portion of the socket a. One end of the resistance is connected with the positive terminal of the filament. A spring contact f, engaging with the coil, is mounted on a contact plate e fixed to an insulating ring d which may be rotated around the socket. A spring contact g on the socket and connected with a battery engages with the plate e. In another arrangement, Fig. 3, two coils a<1>, a<2> in series are housed in a ring d having a flange d<1> to separate the coils, and provided with ventilation holes d<2>. Two spring contacts f<1>, g<1>, of which one f<1> is connected with the filament and the other g<1> with the battery, are mounted on the socket and engage with the coils, the adjustment of resistance being effected by rotating the ring around the socket a. Rotation in the wrong direction at starting is prevented by a lug on the ring engaging with a stop on the base h.
