Abstract

In a fluidised bed boiler, partly burned fuel and bed material are separated from the flue gas outside the combustion chamber and returned to the bed. In a boiler 110, these solid particles are separated out by separating means in the form of a fire wall array 170, 172, 174 and pneumatically conveyed back to the bed 122 by a pneumatic conveyor means 178, 182, 184, 186. Bouyant ash passes right through the boiler 110 to be separated out by a cyclone 152. The separation can occur in a gas reversal chamber in an alternative construction. The pneumatic means can be replaced by a mechanical screw-feeder conveyor means. The boiler is preferably a shell boiler. This system ensures the economic burning of substantially all the fuel content of the solid fuel and the reuse of good bed material which might be otherwise lost. <IMAGE>
