Abstract

An incinerator for disposing of town refuse comprises a fluidized bed 7 of particulate refractory material, such as sand, pulverized ash or alumina, an inlet opening 5 for the refuse, a combustion gas outlet 6, and means for providing a barrier between the inlet 5 and outlet 6 such that lightweight material in the refuse is prevented from being removed from the incinerator through the outlet 6 before the material has had an opportunity to be burnt. The barrier may be in the form of a solid refractory barrier 9 permanently disposed in the container or in the form of a curtain of particulate refractory material introduced into the incinerator through an opening 8.
