Abstract
1,212,887. Refuse incinerators. POWERGAS CORP. Ltd. 9 May, 1969 [10 May, 1968 (2)], Nos. 22412/68 and 22424/68. Heading F4B. In an incinerator for town refuse the refuse to be burnt is separated from an outlet from the incinerator by a mass of refractory granular material which is periodically fluidized to allow non-combustible matter in the refuse to pass therethrough and to be removed via the outlet. In one embodiment, the incinerator 10 has a portion 13 containing pieces of metal or glass 20 supporting a bed 21, which is several feet thick, of sand, pulverized ash or alumina. The refuse enters via a shoot 24 containing a shredder 25, fuel being mixed with the initial load to ensure combustion. Air is supplied from a blower 23 and nozzles 22. To remove non-combustible matter air from a blower 19 is admitted through openings 18 to fluidize the bed when the non- combustible matter falls to the base of the container. Pressure or temperature sensitive sensors are fitted to the incinerator walls and if the level of the surface within the incinerator rises or falls beyond predetermined limits more refuse is admitted or a mechanical or hydraulic device 16 energized allowing a plate 15 to uncover an opening 14 in the base portion 13. In a second embodiment, the incinerator is horizontal and the material 20 is placed adjacent an outlet forming a dam. To remove non- combustible matter both the bed and the dam are fluidized and the material passing through the outlet falls onto a screen (47), the material 20 can then be re-admitted via the inlet.
