Abstract
Sensors are known for sensing impurities, such as oxygen, hydrogen and carbon in sodium. Many such sensors, such as oxygen sensors using an electromechanical cell with ceramic electrolyte, are temperature sensitive and/or sensitive to thermal shock. The sensor or sensors 21, 23 extend into sodium in a temperature-controlled module which can be removed at a coupling 12, 13 from a main sodium pipe or container. The module incorporates an electromagnetic pump 30, 31, 32 for circulating the sodium into and out of the module through a heat exchanger 15, 16. The temperature control means includes thermocouple temperature sensors 36, 37, 38 and heater means 35 to control the temperature of the sodium in the module at a predetermined temperature appropriate to the sensor or sensors irrespective of the temperature of the main body of sodium in pipe 10. <IMAGE>
