Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the water-level detector which is not influenced by temperature, pressure, velocity of flow of coolant, etc. by providing a heat-generating body inside a metal pipe installed in the axial direction of the container of the nuclear reactor and thereby detecting the change in temperature in the axial direction of the metal pipe.
CONSTITUTION: The metal pipe 7 is inserted into the container 6 of the nuclear reactor and an electric heater 8 supplied with current by a power source 18 and temperature sensors 9W16 formed of thermocouples numbering (m) are arranged inside the pipe, while each temperature sensor is connected to a device 19 for processing a signal from the thermocouples and judging the water level. The metal pipe heated by the heater 8 is cooled down nearly to the temperature of water at its part in the water because of good heat conduction from the surface of metal, while it retains the temperature close to that of the heater at its part in the air because of bad heat conduction. Accordingly, the distribution of temperature of the metal pipe in the axial direction thereof changes largely at a position corresponding to the water level 20 inside the container as shown by a solid line 21 in the figure. Therefore, the water level in the container 6 is detected by detecting the point by means of the device 19 for processing the signal from the thermocouples and judging the water level.
