Abstract

For measuring impurities in sodium, at least one sensor, e.g. an electrochemical oxygen sensor or a hydrogen sensor or a carbon meter, is installed and maintained at constant temperature in a chamber separate from the main container or pipeline containing the sodium and connected thereto by horizontal connections through which the sodium is pumped, by an electro-magnetic pump. In one embodiment shown in Figure 1 the outgoing connection 21 is from the top of the chamber 13 so that the chamber remains full of sodium in the event of the main sodium container being drained. Temperature control means including thermocouples 14, 27, heaters 15, 28 and heat exchanger 20, 21 maintain the chamber at a stable operating temperature, above or below the temperature of the main body of sodium 12 and the outer end of the sensor or sensors 10 is located in a container 35 within which the temperature is controlled. The sensors can thus operate under stable temperature conditions and are protected from thermal or pressure transients in the main body of sodium. <IMAGE>
