Abstract

In a furnace (13) having a recuperative burner (10) fitted into its wall (12), means are provided to ensure that the combustion gases produced by the burner (10) circulate widely in the furnace before being exhausted through the burner (10) wherein they serve to preheat the incoming combustion air. As shown the combustion gases enter the burner (10) through a lateral inlet passage (27) in a direction perpendicular to the discharge of gases from the burner outlet port (25). In an alternative embodiment, baffle means are used to cause the combustion gases to circulate widely within the furnace before being discharged through the burner. <IMAGE>
