Abstract
A release electromagnet assembly includes a permanent magnet body 15 associated with a movable member 19, and an electromagnet which co-operates with the permanent magnet such that magnetic attraction between the latter and the yoke 12 of the electromagnet is effective to constrain the movable member. The electromagnet is capable in energisation of coil 13 of producing a flux opposing such magnetic attraction to release the movable member for free movement by spring 21. The permanent magnet body has a magnetic pole of a single polarity disposed opposite the limb ends of the yoke of the electromagnet so that flux from the permanent magnet body passes along a magnetic path which is partly external of and partly within the yoke of the electromagnet. Energization of the release coil 13 produces a flux which passes along a magnetic path which is mainly within the yoke and which opposes the flux from the permanent magnet body, thus releasing the movable member from the constraint applied by the permanent magnet body. The yoke may be of e.g. ferrite. <IMAGE>
