Abstract

An electromagnetically operated valve has a valve member 24 which is spring-urged towards closed position and can be opened and retained in the open position by magnetic force applied to an armature plate 34 connected to the closure member, wherein the electromagnet includes a permanent magnet 36 and has a coil 38 to which a current pulse is supplied to either temporarily increase or reduce the total magnet force applied to the armature plate and thereby open or close the valve member. The coil is in two parts 37, 39 so that the position of the valve can be ascertained by feeding a high frequency a.c. voltage to one part and withdrawing a transmission signal from the other part. <IMAGE>
