Edge-runners and pans and like mills.-Apparatus for disintegrating coal comprises a sorting grid consisting of flat iron bars 5 with points 7 and held apart by spacing-tubes 6 through which pass rods with screwed ends provided with nuts whereby the bars are secured within a rotating tub 1, where they are supported by a spider 2 also provided with joints 3, and a number of freelyrevoluble grinding-cylinders 8 with points 9 and set at different levels above the grid, the axes of the cylinders being stationary and parallel to the grid and arranged in helical relation to each other around the axis of the grid. Coal fed upon the grid is acted upon by the cylinders in succession and disintegrated into the required dimensions to pass through the grid. The bearings of the cylinders may be adjustable in height in the frame uprights, being supported as shown by pegs each engaging one of a series of holes 10 in the uprights. The grid is rotated by teeth 11 thereon engaging a driving-pinion 12.
