Abstract

398,747. Hammer mills for paper pulp. STURTEVANT MILL CO., Harrison Square, Boston, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Doyle, W. T.) March 16, 1933, No. 7983. Convention date, Aug. 5, 1932. [Class 96.] Bales of fibrous material or sheeted pulp are facially shredded whilst being subjected to flowing water and then pulped in water by a rotary hammer mill. The bales 11 are placed by tongs 12 on a chain conveyer 1 and fed between walls 14 to the platform 3 of the mill, the hammers of which move upwardly or downwardly over the faces of the sheets, the centre line through the sheets being offset downwardly or upwardly respectively. The feed opening is filled by the sheets, an adjustable plate 15 being pressed on their upper edges by a foot 16 pivoted to a rod 17 within a spring 18 adjusted by a nut 20. Streams of water from orifices 28, 31 are directed over the sheets. The mill casing comprises a ribbed or serrated zone adjustable by bolts 310 towards the hammers and a slotted zone providing openings 5 for discharge of the pulp, which may be of 5 per cent consistency, to a tank 6, a pump 7 and to a beater &c. The rotor on a shaft 37 comprises staggered rows of hammers on rods 39 passing between endplates, through annular plates, and through bars 41 the bars and plates preferably having alternative holes for the rods 39 to provide radial adjustment for the hammers and the annular plates contacting the pulp sheets. In alternative forms of rotor, the bars are omitted ; and the hammers are in collateral groups.
