Abstract
199,459. Gilman, F., and Thompson, G. H. March 21, 1922. Flexible shafts; shaft couplings.-Apparatus for removing scale &c., from pipes, boilers, hulls of ships, girders &c., comprises a portable self-contained unit, able to be carried and operated by one individual and consisting of a power unit driving through multiplying gearing a flexible shaft carrying at its end a scaling or cleaning tool. Fig. 4 shows, in elevation, the manner in which the drive is transmitted from the driving-shaft 15 to the flexible shaft 21 driving the cleaning tool 55, when the disc 17 carried on the lever 11 is brought into contact with the driving-disc 9 of the motor 5. The driving-shaft 15 is supported in ball-bearings 16 mounted in a casing 14 transverse to the lever 11. and projects at both sides from the casing, carrying the fibre or like disc 17 at one end and a screw 18 at the other. A sleeve 20, split longitudinally at its outer coned end, is screwed on this latter end of the shaft and receives and clamps in position the inner rotary part 21 of the flexible shaft, when an outer sleeve member 22 with a correspondingly coned internal surface is screwed over it at 23. Holes 25 in the sleeve 22 are provided for a tommy-bar for tightening the coupling when necessary, an outer hollow protecting casing 19, screwed to the casing 14, being provided with slots to permit such adjustment. The reduced outer end of the casing 19 receives a split casing 31 clamped around the outer non-rotary portion 26 of the flexible shaft, and retains it in position by a spring-pressed plunger 30 mounted in the casing 19 engaging a recess in the periphery of the casing 31. The sleeve cr casing 31 is provided with a clamping collar member 33 abutting against the end of the casing 19. Specification 160,509, [Class 99 (ii), Pipes, tubes, &c.], is referred to.
