Couplings, disconnectible; spigot-and-socket joints; hinge and swivelling joints; with valves and cocks.-The spigot a of a readily disconnectible tapered spigot-and-socket pipe joint carries a partially-balanced piston h having holes h<3> and a reduced end h' carrying a valve h<2> adapted to seat in an opening a<1> in the end of the spigot a, and to be unseated by an adjustable pin j in the socket b when the parts are screwed together. Interchangeable discs d, d<10> having holes e, e<10>, e<1>, e<11>, and ports g, g<1> connect the spigot and socket to the pipe fittings f, f<1>. The piston h may be rotated to prevent sticking on coupling up the parts by forming interengaging teeth on the valve h<2> and the end of the pin j, or by arranging the ports h<3> in the piston h irregularly, Fig. 8. In a modification, Fig. 7, the socket b swivels on the fitting f<1> which carries the valve-opening pin j<1>, a washer g, operated by the fluid pressure, being provided to make the joint between the spigot and socket and also between the socket and fitting f<1>. The valve h<2> is provided with a renewable seating n upon which it is closed by a light conical spring n<1>. An exhaust hole r is provided in the socket b which is uncovered by the spigot a immediately after the valve h<2> has closed and before the screw connection between the parts has been broken.
