Abstract

Crops, root, topping and tailing machines for. -A machine for topping and tailing root-crops carries a revolving three-bladed topping-cutter 18 mounted on a sleeve 17 movable on a spindle 16. The spindle 16 is driven from a transverse shaft 12 deriving its motion through chain-and-sprocket gear from the axle 2 of the main supporting- wheels 1. The tops are directed to the cutter by a fork 19 that carries on its middle prong a bridge-piece 20 embracing the sleeve 17. A rod 22, adjustable in length, is secured at one end to the fork and at the other to a lever 23 having a pivot 24 that permits horizontal or vertical movement. The sleeve 17 sliding on the spindle 16 permits the cutter to follow the vertical adjustment of the fork or the sleeve may be adjusted and clamped by a screw 21 and permitted to follow the fork by fitting the gear-wheel on the spindle 16 with a spline. The rear end of the fork 19 is pivoted to a link 25 extending from a sleeve 26 which slides on a cross-bar 27. A vertical lever 29 pivoted on the main frame is secured to the fork and is used to adjust the fork and its associated parts laterally being pivoted at its upper end to the lever 23. A tailing-cutter 5 is mounted on the rear part of the frame.
