Abstract

Sluice-gates.-A sluice for diverting water from a main irrigation channel into a branch channel is provided with means for separating off the upper layer from the lower layers of water in the main channel, in such a manner that a relatively small volume of silt is admitted into the branch channel. The head sluice of the branch channel 3, Fig. 1, is preferably at right-angles to the main channel 1, one abutment 5 being in line with the inner bank of the channel and the other 6 parallel thereto and forming a dividing groyne for separating part of the water and diverting it along the sluice 3. The sluice opening between the abutments 5, 6 is divided by a horizontal floor 7, Figs. 1 and 2, provided at its upstream end with a horizontally hinged separating device 12 by which the water having less silt is passed to the sluice 3 while the muddier water passes beneath the floor 7. The separating device may act as a sluice gate in which case it is made to close against an abutment 17, Fig. 6. In a modification, the separating device 12, Fig. 5, is linked to a sliding sluice gate 15.
