Abstract

207,466. Thornton, R. H. April 4, 1923. Scouring-apparatus. - The current of a river is caused to clear its own channel by reducing the effective width of the river by means of a wall which diverts part the water of the channel towards the shore and causes the silt suspended therein to be deposited, the current then being sufficient to keep clear the remaining river channel. The said wall comprises a straight portion e.g. which projects obliquely from a point e adjacent to one of the river banks a into the adjacent side of the main channel of the river and terminates in a section curved back upon itself on the upstream side of the wall. To promote the arresting and deflection of the silt the straight portion of the wall may be provided with a beak i projecting into the channel.
