Abstract

553,954. Excavating. RICHARDS, E. P. Dec. 12, 1941, No. 13822. [Class 68 (i)] A drag-line bucket for underwater or other excavation has an approximately rectangular bottom, vertical sides and a curved back, the sides having forwardly extending wings W connected by an arched plate A to which a lifting cable is attached centrally, while to deflect inflowing water, a guide G is provided above the cutting edge and is supported rearwardly by a rod R and forwardly by an adjustable chain C or studs adjustably fixed to the sides of the bucket. The guide may be formed of a steel plate bent into a circle and welded, and then deformed first to oval form and then to the shape shown ; alternatively, the guide may be of wood, metal, rubber &c. singly or combined, have open or closed ends, or be of solid form or it may be internally loaded or have its lower face formed of a transverse roller or rollers. A curved plate P is provided behind the guide, and also removable cover plates B each with its front edge overlapping the rear edge of the adjacent plate leaving slits D for the escape of water. The cutting edge CE may be formed of inverted T-shaped cast or rolled sections removably fixed side by side to the bottom of the bucket and ending forwardly in a downwardly-turned point.
