Abstract
197,771. Hall, H. L. March 6, 1922. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel; vaporizers, external.- In an engine employing electric or equivalent ignition, and which is constructed to be run either with carburetted mixture or liquid fuel injected into the cylinder, a heater is provided for the fuel, consisting of a coil of pipe e, Fig. 5, in the exhaust pipe, wound round an inner perforated tube d through which the exhaust escapes to the atmosphere. A pyrometer is provided in the exhaust pipe a, and the temperature of the fuel may be regulated by by-passing some of the hot gases. The piping e may be heated by a blowlamp at starting, and means for heating the main fuel tank may be provided. The fuel is supplied by a pump, any excess being returned by means of a spring-loaded valve situated in the supply pipe to the coil e. A non-return valve separates the coil from its supply pipe. The fuel is maintained at a high pressure in the coil e which is in permanent connection with the injector c through the pipe v. Pressure gauges are provided both for the fuel in the heater and that in the pipe supplying it. The amount of fuel injected is regulated by varying the duration and extent of the opening of the injection valve, for which purpose an axially slidable cam-shaft l is employed, actuated from a suitable regulating lever. This lever is also connected to the throttle valve p of a carburettor, so that when fuel is cut off from the latter, the air which is aspirated therethrough is regulated in amount as the quantity of fuel injected into the cylinder is varied. Fuel may be supplied to the carburettor at starting, or when otherwise desired, through a rotary plug or cock, which is connected to anothersimilar cock controlling the supply of heavy fuel to the heater so that as one fuel supply is turned on, the other is cut off. These valves are also connected to a distance piece which is withdrawn from between the axially slidable cam e and its actuating member when the heavy fuel is cut off' and light fuel is being supplied to the carburettor, the withdrawal of the distance piece allowing the cam shaft to move into a position at which no. opening of the injection valve takes place. The engine may be run on a mixture of light and heavy fuels, in which case the carburettor is set to supply a very weak mixture, which is suitably enriched by the fuel injected through the injector c. Light and heavy fuels mixed may be supplied to the heater, or the latter together with the pump and injection valve may be duplicated, different fuel being supplied by each set. The injection valve c comprises a ball f normally held on its seat, as shown, by a rod h, which ball is adapted during inflation to seat on the guide for the rod h, thus preventing leakage of fuel past it. The fuel is sprayed through a non-return valve m on to a sparking plug o.
