Abstract

Edge-runners and pans.-Relates to mills of the type in which the roll or rolls are positively rotated about their axes at a speed which is greater than that corresponding to a mere frictional engagement of the rolls with the pan as the pan or rolls are rotated. Means is provided for cutting-out at will the positive drive for rotating the rolls about their axes, and for varying at will the ratio of the peripheral speed of the positively-driven rolls to the peripheral speed that would be imparted to them by frictional contact with the pans. As shown, the roll 18 is carried at the outer end of the spindle 17 loosely mounted in a boss 16 on an arm 15, the horizontal pivotpin 14 of which is carried in a bearing 13 in a head at the upper end of a sleeve 6 mounted within a boss 7 projecting upwardly from the bottom of the pan 1. A vertical spindle 4, supported in a step bearing 5, passes up through the sleeve 6 and carries at its upper end a spur-wheel 8 gearing with a crown wheel 19 on the inner end of the spindle 17 which is slidingly housed in the outer end of a short radial arm 10 carried at the upper end of the sleeve 6. Wheels 9, 11 at the lower ends of the spindle 4 and sleeve 6 gear with whels 26, 30 on shafts 27, 31 respectively. The shaft 27 is driven from the shaft 31 through gearing 36, 39 or 37, 40 according to the position of the sliding clutch 38. Bosses 22, 23 on the sleeve 6 carry scrapers 24, 25 which engage the wall of the pan and the outer surface of the boss 7 respectively. The sliding discharge door 41 in the bottom of the pan is operated by a screw turned by means of a handle. More than two speeds of the positive drive of the rolls about their axes may be provided if desired.
