Abstract

197,178. Evershed & Vignoles, Ltd., and Rolfe, G. B. April 25, 1922. Clutches, ratchet.-In expanding coil ratchet clutches, a helical spring 78 engages frictionally for part of its length with a driving or driven hollow member 79 and has its grip increased during forward driving by the engagement with its free end 77 of an abutment or one of a number of abutments 76 on a member 75 secured to a shaft 74. On reverse drive, the end 77 slips over the inclined face or faces of the member 75, the spring being axially compressed. A collar 84 maintains the parts in correct relation. The bore of the part 79 may be parallel and the spring tapered towards the free end 77. The spring may be of square-section wire.
