Abstract

196,148. Marks, E. C. R., (Hendey Machine Co.). Feb. 28, 1922. Turning; spindles. -- In a headstock for a lathe &c. the cone pulley 23 and connected pinion 24 run freely on a bearing sleeve 13, the gear 11 and bearing sleeve being slibably secured by keys 21, 22. respectively, to the hollow spindle 6 so that axial adjustment of the spindle may be effected by nuts 16 without disturbing the free running of the cone pulley. The spindle is shouldered to bear against a collar 8 and is mounted at the front end in a taper bearing 1 retained in position by a nut 3 having a flange 4 which protects the bearing surface between the gear 11 and the bearing 1. The rear end of the spindle is mounted in a bearing 5 and carries a gear 18 for actuating the free-motion. The bearing sleeve is provided with a collar 14 having a spring oiler communicating with an oil-way 26. When the back gears are not required the gear 11 is connected to the cone pulley by a pin 27. In a modification, the front end of the spindle is carried in a plain cylindrical bearing.
