Abstract

283,075. Machine-Tool Works Oerlikon. March 18, 1927, [Convention date]. Turning.-In a lathe or like machine the spindle 1 has a main conical journal 2 rotatable within an externally cylindrical undivided bush 3, axial adjustment of the bush being effected by ring nuts 5, 6. A large driving gear 7 is attached to a collar 8 on the spindle immediately in front of the bearing 3 and a small gear 9 is mounted directly on the spindle immediately behind the bearing. A ball thrust bearing 10 abuts the gear 9 and engages a block 11 carried by a cover 13 which is attached to the support 4 for the bearing 3, adjustment of the thrust bearing being effected by a ring nut 12. The rear end of the spindle is supported in a further bearing 15 and the casing 14 is arranged to form an oil bath for the gear wheel 7. The arrangement of the headstock is designed to prevent interference between the bearings, 3, 10 due to expansion of the spindle when heated, to allow independent adjustment of the bearings, to transmit power from the gear 7 to the work without submitting the spindle to torsion and to leave the front end of the spindle free for easy removal of a chuck &c.
