Abstract

124,897. Sutcliffe, G. W. April 5, 1918. Lathe centres and drivers. -Figs. 1 and 2 show a construction in which the cup b has a screwed boss a for attachment to the machine spindle. In this boss is a spring-pressed longitudinally adjustable centre having a turn-screw end n for engagement with the slot in a plug. The centre is slotted longitudinally to pass over a cross-pin j which engages grooves d to hold the centre in the desired position. A pin l by engagement with the pin j prevents the centre from leaving the chuck. An adapter p, shown separately in Fig. 5, can be attached to the cup by screws r in slots q which allow the adaptor to be fixed in an operative or inoperative position. Pins o in the centre engage the slots in containers. Figs. 7 and 8 show a second form of adapter which is secured to the cup by screws and is provided with pieces w to drive an eye-bolt plug for instance. The work is mounted between the socket and a spring- pressed conical tail-stock centre, or the tail-stock centre shown in Fig. 6, which does not form a part of the invention. It consists of a stepped cup t, rotating on a bush u<1>, or on the spindle u and bearing on an antifriction washer t<1> which bears on a fixed collar v.
