Description

H. E. WALLENBERG.
CENTER ADAPTER.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 28. 1919.
Patented Mar. 22, 1921.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAROLD E. WALLENBERG, or DETROIT, mronrean.
GENTEB-ADAPTERi To (:12 whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, HAROLD "E. VVALLEN: BERG, a citizen of the United States olr America, residing at Detroit, in the county of /Vayne and State of Michigan, have 1nvented certain new and useful Improvements in Center-adapters, oi which the followlng is a specification, reference being had there in to the accompanying drawlngs.
This invention relates to a center adapter for lathes, grinders and other machlnes in which centers are employed in head and tail stocks for holding a piece of work; drills or other tools employed for operating on a piece of work, or chucks or other holdlng devices employed for holding tools or pieces of work. 7
My invention aims to provide a center body that may be employed for holding a center, a tool socket, or a chuck. In the first instance, the center body permits of center points being interchanged, renewed or other devices-substituted therefor, and as an in stance of such devices there may be a dr ll or tool socket or a chuck. When a drill socket is to be used it is substituted for the center point and mounted in the center body in the same manner as the center point, but when a chuck is to be supported by the center body then an adapter 1s connected to the center body to support the chuck,
My invention, in its broadest aspect, in-
volves a simple, durable and inexpensive accessory for a lathe or other work performing machine that w1ll facilitate an artlsan in carrying on various kinds of operations by various kinds of tools.
My invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein- Figure l is a side elevation of a center body provided with a center point and the body partly broken away and partly in section Fig. 2 is a similar view of the center body provided with a drill socket.
Fig. 3 is a similar view of the center body provided with an adapter fora chuck, and
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sect10nal view of a modified form of center body.
Reference will first be had to Fig. 1 wherein the reference numeral 1 denotesa tapering center body adapted to be held in theusual manner in a lathe or similar machine. The outer or large end of the body 1 mit of the center Specification of Letters Patent. Pat t d u u. 2 1921. Application filed August 28, 1919. Serial No. 320,438.
has a concentric recess 2 and a central bore l denotes a center having the outer end thereof provided with the usual conicalpoint fiend the inner end of said center is provlded with a collar 6 and an exteriorly screwthreaded stem 7. The relative diameters of the collar 6 and the center at are such that the inner end of the center 4. presents a substantial annular shoulder against the end of the body 1 when the collar 6 extends into therecess 2 and the stem is in screwthreaded engagement with the bore 3. The collar 6 reinforces the stem 7 relative to the center 4: and cooperates with said stem in accurately supporting the center relative to the body To facilitate renioving the center %l the periphery thereof is provided with a plurality of sockets 8 adapted to receive a spanner Wrench or similar tool which will per- 4 being tightened against the end of the center body and said center held as though integral with the body.
Considering Fig. 2 of the drawings, 9 de notes a drill or tool socket having a transverse slot 10 which permits of a wedge or other tool being driven transversely of the socket to release the tang of a drill or other tool placed in the socket. The inner end of the socket has a head 11 somewhat. similar to the center 4 insomuch that it has a collar 6, a screwthreaded stem 7, and sockets 8, so that with the center body 1 devoid of the center 4, the socket 9 may be connected to the center body and thus permit of the center body being employed for retaining a drill or other tool in a machine.
Reference will now be had to Fig. 3 wherein 12 denotes an adapter having a collar 6 and a screwthreaded stem 7, and axially of the adapter is a tapering stud 18 on which may be mounted a chuck 14: or other holding device, the chuck being shown by dotted use, yet permit of an artisan quickly changmg from one ClGVlCBtO another.
' f In some instances it may be desirable to continue the bore 3 through the center body, as shown in Fig. 4L, said bore permitting of a tool being insertedin the body 1 should it be necessary to drive any other tool from the recess 2 of the body.
While in the drawing there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of my invention, it'is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall Within the scope of the appended claim. I That I claim is An adapter of the character described comprising a tapered body having an axial recess and a bore of less diameter than said recessiand communicating therewith, said bore having its Walls s -rewthreaded, a member having an annular shoulder abutting the end of said body and formed to facilitate ro tation relative to said body, a collar carried by said member and closely fitting in the re cess of said body to insure an accurate centering of said collar relative to said body, and a screwthreaded stem carried by said collar and engaging in the screwthreaded bore of said body, said collar being of less depth than said recess so that the shoulder of said member may abut the end of said body.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature in. the presence of two witnesses.
