Abstract

111,097. Aktiebolaget Svenska Kullagerfabriken. Oct. 28, 1916, [Convention date]. Lathes.-A vertical lathe for boring, endfacing, and turning, adapted for machining circular work such as pulleys, has a vertical boring spindle 5 and an annular rotating work table 2. At one side of the boring spindle are two co-axial tool spindles 6, 9 carrying holders 7, 10 for the end-facing tools. These spindles are rocked in their bearings to traverse the tools by rods 13 attached to levers 12. The work shown is a pulley such as described in Specification 101,381. [Class 80 (i), Gearing, Belt &c.], which has a convex rim with a central groove, and the tools shown are specially adapted fur turning such a rim. The groove is cut by a tool 17 mounted in a holder 16 carried on a spindle 20 which can rotate and move endways in a sleeve 18 which carries a holder 14 provided with two tools 15. one for rough-cutting and the other for finishing the convex rim of the pulley. The sleeve IS can turn and move endways in a sleeve 19 which can move endways only in a bearing in the machine standard. This sleeve 19 may be moved by a rack and pinion to position the tools to the work, and has on its outer end an arm 21 forming part of the framework supporting the tooloperating mechanism. The sleeve 18 carries a toothed sector 22 which is oscillated by a pinion 24 on a spindle 25 which also carries a pinion 26 in gear with a toothed sector 28 pivoted on a pin 29 in the arm 21, and jointed to a pair of bars 31, 34. The bar 31 is grooved on one side to move in contact with an adjustable screwed pin 32 carried by a yoke 37<1> secured to the arm 21. The other side of the bar 31 moves over a pin 33 on the spindle 20, and the bar is wedged-shaped so that, as it moves up and down, it feeds the groove-cutting tool 17 which is returned by a spring. The bar 34 moves between a fixed pin 35 and a movable pin carried by the sleeve 18 and the bar is shaped so as to give the required endways movement to the sleeve 18 carrying the tools 15 against the action of a spring.
