Shearing; punching; punches.- Shearing or punching machines are operated by direct fluid pressure and are designed to grip the work on both sides of the cutting-edge. The shearing machine, Fig. 1, has co-operating work-holders 4, 14, the latter of which is seated in a fixed bed 18, the former being moved downwards by fluid-pressure delivered through a pipe 8. The shearing-blades 2, 13 are formed with annular extensions sliding on the cylindrical shanks 3, 17 of the workhulders, the outer ends of these annular extensions constituting pistons whereby the shearing-blades may be moved into contact with the work by fluidpressure supplied through the pipes 6, 16. The excess pressure on the upper member causes the shearing-blades to move downward as one piece, thereby shearing the work 20. Inserted cutting- edges 11 are used and adjustable stops 9, 10 may be fitted to limit the stroke of the upper mernbers. In the punching machine, Fig. 7, the worksupport 22 is stationary and is fitted with an axial plunger 23 which is moved upward to support the work by fluid-pressure delivered through a pipe 26. The upper work-holder 20 is operated by fluid-pressure supplied at 6 and has an axial plunger 21 operated by fluid-pressure delivered through the pipe 8. The punching action takes place owing to the resultant downward pressure on the plungers 21, 23. The co-operating punches may be of various cross-sections.
