[Class 83 (iii).] In hydraulic means for operating a machine tool or like slide, the whole surface of a piston is operative for moving the slide up to working position, and a portion only of the surface is then operative for effecting or controlling the feed movement of the slide. The figure shows an internalgrinding machine, the grinding wheel spindle 4 being carried on the upper of two transverse slides 5, 6, the upper slide 5 being adjustable by a hand-wheel 7 on the lower slide 6, and the latter being connected to the piston rod 8 of an hydraulic cylinder. The piston 9 is slidably mounted on the rod 8 to move between stops 19, 20, and during movement of the slide to and from operative position it bears on one or other of the stops 19, 20. When the operative position is reached, the piston 9 is arrested by a shoulder formed by a front part of the cylinder of reduced diameter, so that the piston rod 8 moves through the piston during the working portion of the stroke, which therefore takes place under reduced load. In the form shown, the piston is held in contact with the end of a screw 16, which is rotated by a hand-wheel to force the piston back to make the working stroke. Alternatively, the movement may be effected by the forces produced by the piston, and be controlled by the screw 16.
