Abstract

Anthraquinonyl-aminonaphthoquinones are prepared by condensing an a -aminoanthraquinone or an a -a -diamino-anthraquinone with a b -naphthaquinone derivative containing a mobile substituent, for example a halogen or a sulphonic group. The resulting products on further condensation with o-diamino-anthraquinones yield anthraquinone-a -b -naphthazine compounds containing anthraquinonylamino groups, which are vat dyes giving red to violet shades on cotton. According to examples:-a -aminoanthraquinone is condensed with potassium b -naphthoquinone-4-sulphonate, and the resulting product is condensed with 2 : 3-diamino-anthraquinone; a -aminoanthraquinone is condensed with 3-brom-b -naphthoquinone, and the product is condensed with 2 : 3-diaminoanthraquinone. The properties are tabulated of the dyes prepared from the following sets of components:- a -amino-anthraquinone, b -naphthoquinone - 4 - sulphonic acid, and 1 : 2-diaminoanthraquinone; 1-amino-4-methoxyanthraquinone, b -naphthoquinone-4-sulphonic acid, and 1 : 2- or 2 : 3-diaminoanthraquinone; 1 - amino - 6 - chloranthraquinone, b -naphthoquinone-4-sulphonic acid, and 2 : 3-diaminoanthraquinone; a -aminoanthraquinone, 6-brom-b -naphthoquinone, and 1 : 2- or 2 : 3-diaminoanthraquinone; 1 : 5-diaminoanthraquinone, two molecules of b -naphthoquinone-4-sulphonic acid or of 3-brom-b -naphthoquinone, and two molecules of 2 : 3-diaminoanthraquinone. 6-Brom-b -naphthoquinone is prepared from 1 : 6-dibrom-2-naphthol by treatment in chloroform solution with ice-cold nitric acid, and then decomposing the resulting 6-brom-1-nitrobrom-2-ketodihydronaphthalene solution by heating.
