Abstract

195,453. Jones, H. Sefton-, (Lorenz Akt.-Ges., C.). Dec. 29, 1921. Discharge-gap apparatus. - T h e electrode holders of an electric arc for producing high-frequency currents, are formed hollow and serve to receive and guide coaxially a number of electrodes inserted one behind another. en the introduction of a new electrode all those in the holder being advanced the length of an electrode. In the arrangement shown, double-ended carbons are used for both electrodes and. both holders are made hollow throughout their length, the, lower holder, Fig. 2, accomirodating three electrodes. To change the electrodes, a new one is inserted in the push l of the lower holder, the push then being rammed home, thereby advancing the three electrodes already in the holder and replacing the spent electrode. The springs c close ever the shoulder of the electrode last introduced and permit the push l to be withdrawn. The ejected electrode a<2> forces in the upper electrode a' together with the casing d, until a ball grip k on the latter drops into apertures m in the holder, after which the electrode continues its movement alone until its lower shoulder passes the grip k. The casing d is then forced out again by a spring f compressed by the inward movement of the casing, and passes over the electrode ejected from the lower shoulder, the lower end of this electrode now forming the upper combustion, point. During renewal of the elcetrode the entire lower holder advances in a bearing against the action of a spring g, thus compensating for the distance between the arcing points. This movement, and consequently the length of the arc-gap, may be adjusted by regulating the spring tension bv means of a wheel i.
