Abstract
194,739. Schneider, H. Sept. 17, 1921. Hydraulic transmission apparatus.-A vehicle drive, particularly for locomotives, comprises a mechanical transmission from a combustion motor to the primary part of an hydraulic gear, the secondary part of which is connected to the driving wheels, one of the shafts of the hydraulic gear enclosing the other shaft, so that the hydraulic gear is driven and drives on both sides of the vehicle. In one form, the motor drives a shaft 1, Fig. 1, carrying the primary part 2, 2<1>, the secondary part 4, 4' being mounted on a hollow shaft 3 carrying the driving wheels 3<11>, 3<111>, the shaft 3 being rotatable in spring-mounted bearings, in the frame R". In a modification, the driving wheels, 10, 10<1>, Fig. 2, are mounted on a shaft enclosed in a shaft carrying the primary part 11, 11<1>, driven by a pinion 7. In a further form a hollow secondary shaft carries the bearings for the primary shaft. The hydraulic gear is filled through a passage 20 in the inner shaft and passages 22, and is emptied by compressed air admitted through the same passages, the expelled liquid passing through pipes 23, a chamber 24 and a passage 26. When the vehicle runs downhill with the motor and primary part stopped, the secondary part may drive an air pump.
