Abstract

Nut-crackers.-A cracking-device is so formed that the points at which the article to be cracked is gripped are in close proximity to the fulcrum or fulcra of the handles. Fig. 1 shows a form in which a handle 1 is provided with jaws or gripping-surfaces 2, 3 and arcuate pieces 4, 5 at each end, one serving for large and the other for small nuts. Both of the arcuate ends are forked and provided with fixed journals 6, 7. The parts of the journals lying between the two links of the forked ends are flattened. The other handle 8, which is provided with a gripping-surface 9, is slotted at 10 so as to form a hook to engage the journals 6, 7. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the handle 8 is provided with two bores 11<1>, 11<11> connected by a slot so arranged that the journal 6 may be engaged by either bore. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the distance between the cracking-surfaces may be altered by turning the member 15 through a right-angle so that it may pass through a hole 14. In a further modification, the member 2 is permanently hinged to the member 8 and carries hinged to it an additional crack. ing-surface, which may be brought under the cracking-surface. 9. Fig. 5 shows a form in which cracking-surfaces are formed on both sides of the member 8, the distance between the cracking members being varied by turning the loose handle 8.
