Mould materials; moulds.-Asbestos, or asbestos bonded with clay, cement, &c., in sheet form is employed for moulds particularly adapted for use in casting aluminium. The mould cavity or cavities and the gates and risers A<5> are formed by cutting apertures in the intermediate sheets A<3>. The slight roughness of the sheets renders the moulds self-venting. One or more of the intermediate sections may be changed or turned end for end to make slight variations in the casting or produce a casting of opposite hand. Cores may be employed and the sheets may be clamped together by bolts or screws or by encircling clamps. When patterns are employed the sheets may be bedded to the pattern whilst still plastic.
