Abstract

192,136. V. M. L. Experimental, Ltd., and Lucas, O. D. Oct. 21, 1921. Parachutes.-The chief stresses in a parachute for smoke signals or flares are taken by reinforcing cords which pass across the fabric and are secured to the edges by gripping-eyelets. The parachute may be made of paper in one or more layers. Fig. 2 shows a plan of a parachute in which a continuous cord or series of cords B is looped through a second series of cords B<1> which are looped together in opposite pairs at the centre. The cords B are gripped to the edge of the parachute by eyelets C with interposed washers c, Fig. 4, and are extended to support eyelets E through which the suspension cords D, Fig. 1, are threaded. The eyelets C allow a certain amount of slip in the event of excessive shock. The cords D are also threaded through eyelets G secured to the main suspension' cords or tapes F, which may be of silk braid. The cords B, B' are held in place by rings of fabric J, J<1>, J' cemented to the upper surface of the parachute, the outer ring J being duplicated on the under surface. The rings may be of tough paper or thin fabric secured bv rubber solution or aircraft dope. When the parachute is made in two layers, the cords are secured between the lavers. In a modification, a cord, in one piece or several lengths, may extend from an eyelet on the edge to a large eyelet or small drum at the central hole of the parachute, passing around this eyelet and back again to a second edge eyelet and so on in succession until the whole parachute has radiating cords. A paper parachute may have the whole surface sprayed or brushed with rubber solution or dope to make it waterproof; and to assist the opening it is covered with French chalk, aluminium powder or soapy substances. According to the Provisional Specification, the reinforcing cords may be passed around or through eyelets at the edge of the parachute, the cord from each eyelet extending right across to a diametrically opposite eyelet. The ends of the cord may be loose and of sufficient length to form the loadsuspending cords. Where two sets of cords are looped together, one set may pass around a series of eyelets through which the other set is passed.
