Peat, preparing.-Peat is neutralized by treatment with an alkali, such as sodium carbonate, and then subjected to the action of aerobic micro-organisms capable of 'producing ammonia, with or without the presence of nitrogen-fixing organisms. The neutralized peat may be heated, for example by live steam, before the bacterial treatment.
