Abstract

16,543. Lamareaux, W. F. Feb. 8, [Convention date]. Sulphur.-In the production of sulphur by bringing sulphur dioxide gases into contact with incandescent coke for such time and at such temperature as to effect substantially complete reduction in a single step, the necessary heat is supplied to ,the gases before bring- ing them into contact with the coke; the heat of the outflowing gases from the reaction chamber, supplemented if necessary by further heat from an independent source, may be utilized for this purpose. Using the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the gases from the main 20 are led through the pipes 14 in a recuperative furnace, where they are heated by the gases issuing from the reduction furnace 1 charged with coke; an auxiliary heater 29 may also be used. In a modification, the recuperative furnace is replaced by a regenerative furnace, and in a further modification, the gases are heated by an external source only. Specification 2834/15 is referred to.
