Abstract

15,288. Hall, W. A. Oct. 29. Lighting burners by spontaneously-igniting devices; pilot-jets.-Relates to portable flame projectors of the kind comprising a container for inflammable liquid adapted to be carried on the back of a soldier, a container for gas under pressure, a discharge tube adapted to be held by the soldier, and means for igniting the liquid. According to the invention the liquid is ignited by a pilot-jet N, Fig. 2, burning a gas which ignites spontaneously. The gas for the pilot-jet N may consist of a mixture of acetylene and hydrogen phosphide formed by dropping water on a mixture of calcium carbide and calcium phosphide in a receptacle L, Fig. 1. The nozzle S, Fig. 3, may be surrounded by a wind shield, pierced to receive the pipe N for the pilot-jet.
