Abstract
10,047. Porter, A. T. April 29. Vaporizers, external. -Liquid fuel is vaporized by being projected at high velocity in the form of a spray through a flame area, air sufficient or in excess to maintain the flame being admitted, and mechanically extinguishing the flame at a predetermined point in the progress of the vaporized material. The resulting product consists of a condensible vapour containing a small percentage of fixed gases. Oil and compressed air from pipes 8, 11 respectively are projected through a nozzle 7 into a chamber 1 and ignited by a sparking-plug 31. The spreading of the spray is laterally restricted by a sleeve 50 sliding on a tube 49 surrounding the nozzle 7. Part of the oil is burned in maintaining a flame which is progressively extinguished by gauze screens 25, 26, and the vapour passes through a non-return valve 5 into a chamber 3. Air is supplied by a pipe 13 and heated in a coil 15 in the chamber 2, this heated air being supplied to the partial-combustion chamber 1 and to mix with the vaporized product in the chamber 3. A hollow metal cone 23 is located in the flame-extinguishing chamber 2 to spread the stream of atomized material and assist in the vaporizing action. A thermostat 35 automatically discontinues the sparking at the plug 31 when the flame has been established, and if the flame becomes extinguished closes the spark circuit to effect ignition. A pipe 28 conveys the vapour from the mixing- chamber 3 to the engine.
