Abstract

120,663. Marks, E. C. R., (General Engineering Co.). Dec. 31, 1917. Lighting burners by electric devices.-The ignition of a perfectly combustible mixture of oil spray and air is effected by first igniting, by means of an electric spark, a richer mixture of oil spray and air, which is then carried into the poorer mixture so as to ignite it. Figs. 1 and 2 show two parallel vertical sections of part of a, motorvehicle water tube steam generator and its heater. Oil is fed from a manifold D' to the main burner or burners D, C, Fig. 1, and to the igniting burner L, Fig. 2; the apparatus described has two main burners and one igniting burner between them. A perfectly combustible mixture of spray and air is formed in the tube C, and a richer and more readily ignitable mixture is formed in the chamber J, Fig. 2, between them The oil enters each of the main burners through an orifice D<6> in a small venturi tube D, and is carried forward by the air from a blower A' through the tube D into the large venturi tube C and a bowlshaped combustion chamber G, where it is ignited by the flame from the chamber J, Fig. 2. In the igniting-burner the oil from the orifice L<2> is sprayed by air from the nipple L<3>, which carries it forward to the terminals N of the sparking- plug. The outlet from the chamber J has an upturned lip K to carry the flame into the path of the mixture from the tube C. Openings J<1> allow small quantities of air to pass from the blower A' to the chamber J.
