Abstract
14,055. Classen, A. Oct. 4. Ammonia is obtained by treating a mixture of nitrogen and hydrogen with dark and spark electric discharges and with catalysts supported on carriers of an acid character, the term acid character meaning, in the case of silicates, a content of not less than 93 per cent of silica. Suitable catalysts are mentioned. The reaction is preferably effected at 50-90‹ C., but the temperature should not be below 250 C. The apparatus employed consists, for instance, of a contact chamber formed of two electrodes, an outer non-conducting electrode, for instance of glass or porcelain, surrounding an inner conducting- electrode, for instance cf brass or copper. The outer electrode is surrounded by a cooling- liquid (water), into which the negative current supply is immersed. Dark discharges are obtained if the distance between the electrodes is small, and spark discharges if the distance is great; but, by regulating the distance, both may be obtained at once.
