Abstract

12,664. Hayes, W. B. Sept. 3. Splints; tension apparatus.-Splints of the skeleton type known as Thomas splints are modified so that one standard make can be adjusted and applied to different fractures and to persons' of different sizes. The split comprises an adjustable thrustring a adapted to take a bearing on the trunk, and a pair of tubular members b which are adjustably connected to the ring a and receive the legs of a telescoping U-shaped member c. In fitting the splint, the split ring a is passed round the thigh and is bent to the shape of a thigh before being pressed upwards against the trunk. The meeting ends of the ring may be clamped together. The members b are then moved round the ring a until they attain the desired position, after which they are clamped by the nuts b'. The U-shaped member c is finally adjusted and clamped by the screws b<3>. The screws b<3> may be replaced by adjustable collars adapted to be fixed to the legs of the member c. A knee-rest may be added to the appliance, as shown in Fig. 2, consisting of a U-shaped support pivotally and adjustably connected to the members b or c. The cross-bar d' of the support is bowed so that the support can be folded flat against the members b when not required, and yet not interfere with a limb held in the straight splint.
