Abstract
11,019. Ottino, C. P. July 29. [Addition to 20,363/14, Class 92 (ii), Ordnance.] Toothed and friction gearing.-In an improved form of the centrifugal apparatus for discharging elongated projectiles as described in the parent Specification, speed-multiplying gears for driving the impeller at a high rate of speed are used. As shown in Fig. 1 the spindle 11 of the impeller is driven by means of a pulley 10 acting through speed-multiplying gearing comprising a frictional annulus 13 driving double pinions 29, 27 rotatable on fixed axes carried by a standard 12, the pinions 27 driving the spindle 11. Frictional grip is maintained by means of a ring 30 attached to the annulus 13, by spring-pressed bolts 30a, and also by a tapered sleeve 20 on the spindle 11 pressed into engagement by a spring 22 adjusted by means of a nut 24. The parts are mounted on ball bearings as shown, and a roller support 31 for the pinions 29 is mounted on the sleeve 20. An alternative speed-multiplying gear is shown in Fig. 6 in which double helical toothed elements are employed, the driving-annulus being connected up to the pulley 10 by a cone clutch 36 normally disengaged by a spring 35. The toothed elements 41, 40 are supported by rolling surfaces 44.
